My brief here was to paint an elderly woman as she might have looked in her youth.

I decided in the end to keep that a mystery and bring her into the foreground but veiled and facing away, towards her house. To me, the theme of the picture is "looking back," and I wanted to imply that we don't see the past clearly, and our past selves in particular.
